A feature wish list for Facebook

by on August 10, 2010 in Social Media

Today we’ve learned that Facebook is testing an notification unsubscribe option and honestly it’s about time. I’m weary of liking something only to get notifications of ever comment left on that post. This idea of subscribing to a topic has been around the web for years and yet Facebook is just discovering it.facebook_stoneage

It is just further evidence that from a usability standpoint Facebook is a strange  platform. They will make drastic changes to the user interface (UI) and totally change event options but they continue to drag their feet in implementing some basic features.

So in the hopes that Facebook is actually interested in making life better for it’s users here is my Facebook feature wish list.

Allow Renaming of Facebook Pages

I’m baffled at Facebook’s stance on not allowing you to rename your page. Whether you need to abbreviate or reflect a business name change there simply isn’t any method for doing this through Facebook. Heaven forbid you want to change your URL.

Broaden Ownership of Pages

People come and go and an organization’s page should be the property of the organization and not just the person who created it. It’s 2010 and I still have to advise clients to create a dummy account for page creation so ownership isn’t tied to a personal account.

For all the talk of branding and presence Facebook just doesn’t offer robust options for managing presence.

In Mail Replies

Why force me to visit Facebook to reply to a message?

Yes I know you want to force me into your domain so I’ll see ads and you control the experience but is it really such a bad thing to allow me to respond from the email itself?

Go ask Disqus to build it for you.

The rest…

  • What happened to your Eventbrite integration on Facebook Events?
  • An native RSS app that makes adding a feed dead simple. Shortcut->Just purchase Networked Blogs.
  • Photo Gallery Embeds – You are dominating photo sharing so why not allow us to embed a photo gallery to a website?

What did I forget? Leave a comment and let’s hope Facebook is listening.

On the RSS department the “RSS Graffitti” application is the best I’ve seen. Works on profiles and pages, looks great and I still have to see a problem with it. Worth checking it out.

You can reply by email to comments at least, though I don’t know about messages. I think just comments…I hate when people use FB messages instead of email (if they have my email address) since I rarely use Facebook, and have to log in just to reply. And I have to use the web interface, rather than the many rich email clients with thousands of features vs. Facebook Messages :-)
